Polar Bear
Species Name: Polar Bear
Scientific Name: Ursus maritimus
Animal Name(s): Snow
The Bear Facts:
Polar bears are the world’s largest land predators. They top the food chain in the Arctic, where they dine primarily on seals.
Polar bears have great eye sight underwater, and can smell a seal from miles away. They are also patient hunters – they will wait hours for a seal to emerge from an air hole in the ice.
At Reid Park Zoo:
Polar bears receive many types of food at the Zoo, including fish, ground meat, and fresh fruits and vegetables. The Zoo’s bears can always choose to spend time in an air-conditioned space that you can’t see, but more often they stay cool in the pool, and their great insulation helps keep their temperature constant…even in the heat.
