Mandrill

Species Name: Mandrill
Scientific Name: Mandrillus sphinx
Continent: Africa
Animal Name(s): DJ (male, Aug 91) and Cere (female, Aug 90)

Monkey Business:
One of the mandrill’s jobs is to help grow plants. After eating fruit, the mandrill “deposits” the seeds with built-in fertilizer.

Although these large monkeys are adapted to live on the ground, they seek shelter in trees at night.

Mandrills communicate with facial expressions and behaviors such as head bobbing or slapping the ground.

At Reid Park Zoo:
We have one male mandrill and one female. Males have bright colors on their faces. You can easily spot the female because she is much smaller than the male.

Zoo keepers make a variety of puzzle feeders to challenge these bright animals and to encourage natural foraging behavior.
