DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Zoo on Tuesday\, April 17 from 1-3 p.m. to celebrate the "Protect Your Skin" program kick-off.  The Zoo is partnering with the Skin Cancer Institute at the Arizona Cancer Center to spread the message of sun safety to the Tucson community!    Kids can enjoy arts and crafts activities and meet Ray\, the Sun Safe Mascot\, and adults will have the opportunity to test a facial skin analyzer machine.  We will be unveiling new sun safe message signs by the tiger\, elephant\, capybara and flamingo enclosures.  Be sure to take some sunscreen from our free dispensers\, located in most of the Zoo's restrooms! DESCRIPTION:AAZK’s Bowling for Rhinos fund raiser is a national event with over 60 chapters of AAZK raising over $300\,000 annually.  BFR funds support Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya\, Ujung Kulon National Park in Java\, Indonesia and Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park in Sumatra. These sanctuaries not only save rhinos but entire ecosystems! 100% of the money raised goes directly to these organizations.    Your local chapter of AAZK is made up of zoo keepers from Reid Park Zoo and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum who volunteer their time raising awareness and money for conservation efforts. SUMMARY:Recycled Art of Kioko Mwitiki
DESCRIPTION:Kenya's famous artist\, Kioko Mwitiki\, will give a public lecture at a showing and sale of his metal sculptures. This free event will take place inside the Zoo at 5:30PM on Thursday\, April 14\, 2011.    Kioko has earned the praise of local and international art critics. He blends elements of African culture with satire. For his sculptures\, Kioko recycles scrap metal found at junkyards with he refers to as "living grave sites for life." His work can also be seen at the San Diego Zoo.    The event is hosted by the newly formed Annual Giving Circle\, the FriendZ of the Reid Park Zoo. DESCRIPTION:    From June 1- August 31\, Giraffe Encounters take place from 9:30-10:15 a.m. on weekdays\, and from 9:30-10:15am and 1:30-2:00pm on weekends at the giraffe exhibit. You may arrive any time during this period. Closing time may change in inclement weather\, or if the giraffes’ daily feeding limit is reached.    For just $2 per person\, experience the thrill and excitement of hand-feeding one of the reticulated giraffes here at the Reid Park Zoo. No registration is necessary. Payment will be accepted by Giraffe Encounter staff at the time of feeding. Cash or check only. Sorry\, we cannot accept purchase orders or process Giraffe Encounter payment at the admission window.    All Giraffe Encounter proceeds benefit Zoo conservation projects & staff development.  Giraffe Feeding Guidelines     For safety reasons\, visitors must follow these guidelines to be allowed to participate.   The giraffes will use their long tongue to gently take the food from your hand. Teasing the giraffes with the food is prohibited.   Giraffes prefer not to be touched. Please enjoy feeding them and taking pictures with them instead of reaching out to touch them.   Good listening skills are needed to learn about the giraffes from the zoo keeper on the giraffe encounter platform. The keeper will also provide special safety instructions if necessary.
