Expansion Update

We have exciting news about our new home for elephants, known as Expedition Tanzania.  This will be the largest expansion in the Reid Park Zoo’s 45 year history, adding seven acres to our Zoo including 3 acres dedicated solely to elephants.

We thank all of you for your generous support.  Your donations are helping to make this a reality.  The seven acre expansion will feature the Click Family Elephant Care Center and an Education Galley supported by the Foundations directed by the Lohse Family.  The Zoo has also received major contributions from the Kresge Foundation, Mrs. Bernadine Shirley, Tucson Electric Power, the John M. Simpson Foundation – Susan and Mickey Cavender, and numerous private donations.

Coming Fall 2011!

The Society has met the original capital campaign goal and there is a strategy in place with the City of Tucson that respects the original intent of the agreement and has no impact on the City’s general fund.  The Society also increased our commitment to the project and that is why we are asking for you to be a part of this exciting project.

Construction is expected to begin in the late summer of 2010, with an anticipated opening of Expedition Tanzania in the fall of 2011.  Through a partnership with the San Diego Zoological Society, the exhibit will open with additional elephants and their offspring.

Completion of this project, along with the additional elephants, will enable the Reid Park Zoo to reach a new level of excellence and provide innovative educational and recreational experiences for our citizens.

Help us complete this project by donating below or in the donation boxes at the Zoo.  Contact Diana Whitman at 520-881-4753 x15 for additional giving options and opportunities to name feature in Expedition Tanzania.  This is an exciting time for the Reid Park Zoo!
