New Marabou Stork at the Zoo 1-31-12

Meet Reid Park Zoo’s newest resident: a 1-year-old male marabou stork who arrived from the Dallas Zoo last week! After 30 days in our Animal Health Center, and some standard health tests, he’ll join another male stork (age 43) in an African multi-species exhibit that also includes white rhino and Speke’s gazelle. Be sure to watch for him when you visit the Zoo this spring–how could you ignore a face like this?

Lion Cubs Debut on Exhibit 9-27-11

The cubs are out! Mom “Kaya” and her three cubs will have access to their exhibit in the mornings (usually until 12:00 or 1:00pm) until further notice. The cubs do get tired, and will rest periodically behind the scenes, so getting to the Zoo early is your best bet. The Zoo is open to the public at 9:00am every day. ZOO MEMBERS ONLY will also be admitted from 8:00am-9:00am for the next three days: Wed. 9/28, Thurs. 9/29, and Fri. 9/30.

Female Tiger Makes Exhibit Debut 9-13-11

“Sita,” a 10-year-old female tiger who arrived at Reid Park Zoo from the Bronx Zoo earlier this summer, went out on exhibit for the very first time this morning. She was calm and confident, and got a lot of attention from Zoo guests and the media. She’ll have some time to get comfortable on exhibit by herself, and then we’ll make plans to introduce male tiger “Baheem” back to the exhibit, and to Sita. We hope they will hit it off!

Baby tamandua born 8-10-11

A tiny tamandua (pronounced tuh-MAN-deh-wah), or lesser anteater, was born at the Zoo on August 10th, 2011. Mom and baby are doing fine. Tamanduas are part of our education program–although they are not on exhibit, you might see one of our our adult tamanduas onstage during a weekend presentation.

Three African lion cubs were born to female “Kaya” late last week–Kaya’s Keeper heard them vocalizing when she arrived on the morning of July 28^th,2011. Mom and the three cubs have been left largely undisturbed so that she can focus on taking good care of them, but vets gave the babies their first medical check this morning. The three cubs (two boys and a girl) seem healthy and strong. They won’t be on exhibit for a while, but we’ll keep you posted on their growth!

10 New Flamingos Explore Their New Home

The flamboyance of flamingos that arrived at the Zoo last month have passed their health exams with flying colors (well, pink, at least). Last week, Zoo Keepers moved the flamingos, one by one, from the Health Center to their new habitat and carefully released each bird into the water to join the existing flock. See if you can count all 21 flamingos next time you visit!

Baby zebra makes his debut – and needs a name!

The Grevy’s zebra that was born January 30th has made his public debut. He had a rough start to life with a few health complications, but you’d never know it now. He is healthy, and very active. For now he is out on exhibit each morning but that schedule may change, so be sure to check back here before visiting if you hope to see him.

Boy zebra needs a name

He has a protective mom and a dedicated staff of Zoo Keepers taking care of him, but he doesn’t have a name! E-mail your name suggestion to zooeducation@tucsonaz.gov by February 18. Be sure to include your suggestion, your name, e-mail, phone number, and any reason for your suggestion. If you are not an adult, include your grade level as well. The Keepers will select their favorite name from the submissions and the winner will receive a one-year membership to the Zoo and lunch for four people at the new Zoofari restaurant in the Zoo!

New demonstration animals!

The Zoo is pleased to introduce Wetzel, a six-banded armadillo; and Jasper, a marbled polecat. Wetzel and Jasper made their debut to delighted Zoo visitors for the very first time this morning! They will be on exhibit many mornings as staff or volunteers are available. Check the event board at the front gate when you arrive for these and other great opportunities happening daily at the Zoo!
